From the Editor...Happy Summer

The summer is nearly gone as I write this, and what a wonderful summer it’s been, filled with lots of sunshine, refreshing rains and the occasional tornado warning or hailstorm. ? I love Colorado!

Fall is my favorite time of year, with sunny, crisp, warm days and cool, comfortable nights, and the scent and color of fall-colored leaves and ripened harvest. The weather is usually purr-fect for planting! Did you know that you can plant until mid to end of October, depending upon the weather? Be sure to take advantage of our fall sales and add to your landscape now.

Autumn is a time to be grateful for our harvest from the season and for all the wonderful things the earth has given us. Please know that we at Tagawa Gardens are grateful to you for your support this past spring and summer season, as well as for all seasons in the past and to come. We are honored to help you and your family create a beautiful home space, indoors and out.

This fall we’ve begun having visits by Grey Kitty on the weekends. He’ll be visiting our departments with half-hour, unadvertised Grey Kitty® Garden Specials—what a great way to enjoy a special discount and/or visit with our special kitty!

Our Pumpkin Festival returns for another year of great family fun for those of you with small children. New this year is our Adult Garden Classes tract, concurrent with Pumpkin Festival, so that we don’t miss the opportunity to offer educational programs during these three weekends that are prime for fall gardening fun. See pages 4 and 5 or tagawagardens.com for a complete schedule.

Our poinsettias will have arrived in our greenhouses sometime in September, so you may see them growing beautiful day by day for your decorating and gift giving needs this Holiday season. You may not recognize them at first, as they are completely green and much smaller than you might remember, but come the middle of November, they’ll be all grown up into the beautiful plants you’ve come to know. Jere, Kris and our Production Dept. nurture each poinsettia to its fullest potential, paying attention to every detail so that you can be sure that our poinsettias are of the highest quality and value.

We look forward to seeing you, please stop in this fall and winter, enjoy a cup of complimentary herbal tea, chat with us and stroll our warm and sunny greenhouses. No matter the season, our store is filled with beautiful, seasonal flowers, plants and interesting ideas for your home and garden space.

Wishing you and your family a wonderfully happy, safe and peaceful fall and winter Holiday season,
Sincerely,
Beth,
Tagawa Gardens’ Manager

Dick's Corner

Dick’s Corner By Dick, our Garden Expert

Fall is a wonderful time to relax and enjoy a cool one – AFTER we clean up our annual, perennial, and vegetable gardens, adding the non-diseased plants to the compost pile. The gardens look good, but an inch or so of compost turned under will make planting easier next spring. Nature’s Yield™ compost is an excellent additive. Insects and insect eggs are exposed for the birds to eat…less insects next year!

Late October is time to fertilize the lawn and aerate. This last fertilizing is the most important for good root growth, preparing the grass for next Spring. Richlawn Pro-Rich™Winterizer is a slow-release organic fertilizer that won’t burn. We have several other lawn fertilizers such as Colorado’s Own™ and Fertilome® Lawn Fertilizer. They are all excellent products! Be sure to water the lawn and trees and shrubs every 3 to 4 weeks as long as the ground isn’t frozen.

Cover your strawberries. You can use an erosion barrier or throw on a light covering of straw, which works well. Prune out the dead canes in the raspberry bed if they are the June-type or mow them all off if they are ever-bearing (this type gives a very large crop in the fall).

Fall is a great time to examine your trees and shrubs for dead, broken and crossed branches. They can be removed now or in early spring. There are those that are “bleeders”…maples, birch, and walnut to name a few…that should be pruned in the summer. Suckers can also be removed in the fall and winter. Aspen are prone to leaf fungal diseases. The leaves should be raked up. DON’T compost them as the fungus over-winters in the fallen leaves!

Aspen and other trees and shrubs have had aphid and other insect problems this year. There are eggs and over-wintering insects hiding in the cracks and crevices of bark and crotches. Spray them with horticultural oil such as Sun Spray® Parafinnic Oil or Fertilome® Summer Oil. (PICTURE)

Place rose collars around roses in November and fill with light mulch. Prune roses in the spring. Only remove broken, dead, or black canes now.

Deer and rabbits are cute but can become pests, damaging trees and shrubs. The rabbit population has exploded so there will be lots of competition for the available food supply, i.e., our yards! Animal repellants are effective but should be rotated so the animals don’t get used to them. Bobbex®, Liquid Fence®, and Deer Off®, as well as Milorganite® for deer, and Blood Meal for rabbits have been quite effective. I used many of them with good results. As always, READ AND FOLLOW PACKAGE DIRECTIONS!

Let’s get a leg up on next year! Water the trees, shrubs, lawns, and perennials. Pick up diseased leaves and dispose of them (NOT IN THE COMPOST BIN!). Fertilize the lawn in late October or early November. Also spray for dormant insects. This looks like a lot of work but we’ll have many nice days to do what’s necessary.

Again this year we will have the nicest selection of CHRISTMAS TREES available for you to choose from, plus fresh wreaths and garlands!

Now let’s sit back and have a cool one while leafing through all those garden catalogs! Have a happy and peaceful holiday!

Everything's Coming Up Roses

Now that cooler, shorter days herald the dormancy season for roses, remember to curtail the watering and halt any fertilizing & pruning (broken & blackened canes excepted) until Spring. Prepare roses for winter after first freeze—rose collars work nicely.

Perennial Pathways

My friends, strike the phrase ‘dead of winter’ from your thoughts! Such harsh and radical terminology, I’d much prefer thinking of my garden as abeyant, quiescent , dormant or simply, sleeping soundly. Primrose and Hellebores, snowdrops and crocus will be our spring alarm clocks and we shall again dance our own garden rituals with Mother Earth.
